In the world of motivation, there are two main types:

This exercise aims to help you explore your life through the lens of the five key factors of intrinsic motivation: Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose, Curiosity, and Autotelicity.

Whenever I feel out of alignment, I turn to this exercise, and it consistently helps me regain clarity and take purposeful action. I hope it brings you the same insight and motivation it has brought me!

Do you feel in control of actions and decisions?
Mastery:
Do you feel enough healthy challenge towards personal improvement?
Purpose:
Do your actions align with a larger meaning or goal?
Curiosity:
Do you have an insatiable itch to learn more about your work?

Do you love the activities you do while working?

Feeling Stuck? Answer these prompts.

For Autonomy:

  1. Reflect on Control: In what areas of your life do you feel the most control, and how can you apply that feeling to other areas? Which areas do you feel the least control, and what is within your control to change the situation?
  2. Decision-Making: What is one decision you recently made that prioritized your autonomy and how did it make you feel?
  3. Boundaries: Are there boundaries you can set to protect your time and focus? What might those boundaries look like?
  4. Time Management: How can you structure your day to ensure your priorities come first, giving you a sense of control over your time?
  5. External Influences: What external influences or pressures are impacting your sense of autonomy, and how can you minimize their effect?

For Mastery:

  1. Skill Reassessment: Are there skills or opportunities you once valued that no longer serve your current goals? How can you reassess and realign your focus?
  2. Challenges: What challenges excite you, and what can you do that is within your control that will that allow you to grow in those areas?
  3. Passion vs. Proficiency: Are there areas where you feel passionate but not yet proficient? How can you bridge that gap?
  4. Enjoyment in Mastery: What aspects of your work do you enjoy the most because of your expertise, and how can you maximize these experiences?
  5. Skill Integration: How can you integrate different skills you possess to create a unique offering or perspective in your field?

For Purpose:

  1. Global Issues: If you could solve any global issue, what would it be and why?
